Microsoft Windows Shell Scripting and WSH

[more info / buy...]

This book provides an good getting started approach for Shell Scripting and VBScript.  In fact, if you are familiar with Shell Scripting (batch files) it can help you come up to speed on VBScript.  This is due mainly to handling each of these languages in chapter structures that are very familiar.

Microsoft Windows Script Host 2.0 Developer's Guide (With eBook Copy)

[more info / buy...]

Microsoft's "Windows Script Host 2.0 Developer's Guide" written by Gunter Born is a great all-around resource for getting started with scripting on Windows. The book starts with a great primer on the basics and works its way through advanced scripting topics such as controlling windows application and file I/O. The author's years of development come through in solid code examples. The included CD is filled with samples and custom controls to use in your scripts.

Windows Xp: Command Line

[more info / buy...]

Ever since Windows 95 it seems like finding a good book on using the command line is impossible. Tim Hill's "Windows NT Shell Scripting" was a much needed book - so I had high hopes for this book. This book seems much more intended for a class on basic command line commands. Most of the commands covered work on NT and many on 95.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide (with eBook copy)

[more info / buy...]

This book is written by Microsoft's "Windows Resource Kit Scripting Team" This is a well done 1200 page book. It is also available online. Part 1 of this book starts with a respectable VBScript Primer to jump start those who haven't used it yet. This is followed by WSH and Script Runtime Primers which help you understand all the built-in functions you can access without needing additional custom controls. This first section is completed by primers on ADSI and WMI - arguably two of the most powerful scripting APIs available to Windows Script Host.

Win32 Perl Scripting: The Administrator's Handbook

[more info / buy...]

Perhaps you are a UNIX administrator turned, Windows administrator - or have just had a serious infestation of Windows. If you've been a Perl programmer for eons, this book will help you up to speed on how to script all those admin tasks on Windows! Includes many code samples and has sections on ADSI and WMI as well.

Windows 2000 Scripting Bible

[more info / buy...]

The Windows Scripting Bible provides a great all around reference for common scripting tasks. If you are new to scripting, this would be a good second book after purchasing a tutorial type book.

Vbscript in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference

[more info / buy...]

O'Reilly books are of course legendary!  VBScript in a Nutshell is no exception.  The reference section comprises two thirds of the book and had indepth syntax and usage information on all VBScript functions and the built in objects.

Windows Scripting Secrets

[more info / buy...]

"Windows Scripting Secrets" really does give you "secrets" There are many pages devoted to understanding how to use scriptable controls on your system that you may not even have known were there. One little script tests every scriptable control on your system and documents the interface to it.

Windows Script Host

[more info / buy...]

For those of you who are familiar with Tim Hill's "Windows NT Shell Scripting", you understand that he knows his scripting. "Windows 2000: Windows Script Host" is the best all around VBScript Quickstart I have come across. The book does not assume you are familiar with scripting or programming, but by the end of the book you are learning how to create VBScript Classes and Components! The book flows very well from beginner's basics, through intermediate topics and finally into just enough of the advanced stuff to make you productive with the more sophisticated features of VBScript.

Windows Script Host

For those of you who are familiar with Tim Hill's "Windows NT Shell Scripting", you understand that he knows his scripting. "Windows 2000: Windows Script Host" is the best all around VBScript Quickstart I have come across. The book flows very well from beginner's basics, through intermediate topics and finally into just enough of the advanced stuff to make you productive with the more sophisticated features of VBScript. It also serves as good reference. The sections on objected oriented scripting and VB Classes do not assume any previous knowledge about object oriented coding. I would highly recommend it as a first book for beginners, a quickstart for intermediate to advanced scripters who've used other languages and a bridge into object oriented scripting for those of you who aren't versed in it yet.

Scripting Windows 2000

[more info / buy...]

This book is the only windows scripting book I have seen that has a chapter on WMI!  I found this to be the only redeeming attribute.  The book seems quite schizophrenic.  Extensive pages are given to describing Windows 2000 features that are unrelated to scriping.  It also has mid-chapter topic changes that leave me wondering what I have to be smoking to make sense of the topic organization.  Browse it before you buy it.

Windows NT/2000 ADSI Scripting for System Administration

[more info / buy...]

We have talked a little about ADSI (Active Directory Services Interface) in the Junk Drawer in the past. It is important to know that ADSI is not specific to Active Directory, it can also access Windows NT objects, NDS objects, Exchange directory objects and any LDAP store. In addition, within the ADSI definition of "Directory Services" is all kinds of systems things I wouldn't personally categorized as "directory" (For instance it can control Windows NT services). In short, this means it may be much more useful to you than you realize. This book has been written with ADSI and the administrator in mind!

Vbscript Programmer's Reference

[more info / buy...]

This heafty little book (850 pages) is quite the tomb of knowledge.  It is not focused solely on the use of VBS within Windows Scripting Host, but does provide many useful examples and references - as well as a chapter on WSH.  It contains the most complete error code reference I have seen in a VBS book.  Although there are more concise programmer's reference books for VBScript, this one can serve as a tutorial as well as a reference guide.

Microsoft SMS Installer

[more info / buy...]

Finally there is a third party book to guide and tutor you through one of the best kept secrets of SMS - SMS Installer. Rod Trent has put together a fairly comprehensive book to help you get up to speed on SMS Installer - there is also a section that encapsulates a lot of Rod's tips and techniques for using SMS Installer.

Windows Shell Scripting and WSH Administrator's Guide

[more info / buy...]

Although it may suit some learning styles, I felt this book was too wide and not deep enough.  To me this book attempted to cover too much.  It spent a disproportionate amount of time on shell scripting and then including Jscript further reduced the time spent on VBScript.

WSH and ADSI Administrative Scripting

[more info / buy...]

Lots of great information - but not related to the book title. I guess the other alternative is that I misunderstood the title.  This book has some good intro to WSH sections as well as a very good section on the new stuff in WSH 5.6.  There is yet another obligatory reference chapter on all the information in the WSH help file - as many books on scripting include. The ADSI sections are a decent introduction to scripting ADSI - however these sections are 100 pages out of 300.

Managing Enterprise Systems with the Windows Script Host

[more info / buy...]

This book is a good, solutions oriented scripting book with lots of source code. It is usually a good idea to have several solutions oriented books and a solid reference book as you are learning scripting. Solutions oriented books give specific script source code listing to solve specific administration problems. The section on Regular Expressions has already helped me out on a project. If you own the book you can also download the source code from the Apress.com website.
