Software virtualization is a new twist on virtualization which allows specific portions of a software application's access to the real system to be virtualized.  This gives many of the benefits of full OS virtualization products like VMWare and Virtual PC without requiring another complete operating system instance to license and manage.  Software Virtualization also enables interesting alternatives like virtualizing part of the application access to the real hardware (say the registry), while leaving other parts to directly access the real system (say the file system) or putting the application under the impression is has administrator rights.
